The 2024 SAFIB Centenary Shield commenced in February with the England U18 Schoolboys aiming to defend their title, having shared it with Wales in the previous year. Despite a slow start to the tournament, England sought redemption in their penultimate match against the Republic of Ireland at the historic Poundland Bescot Stadium.
The match began with a lightning-fast start as England took the lead within 17 seconds. Jude Entwistle capitalized on a defensive error from the Republic of Ireland, slotting the ball past the goalkeeper after a swift move down the left flank.
Despite early dominance from England, the Republic of Ireland gradually asserted themselves in possession without threatening the English goal. However, it was England who continued to create the clearer chances, with Freddie Haden narrowly missing the target after a precise through ball from Jack Matton.
In the 21st minute, Jude Entwistle doubled his tally and England’s lead, with a clinical volley courtesy of an exquisite chip from Oliver Spicer, putting England firmly in control of the game.
England’s goalkeeper and Captain, James Taylor, demonstrated his importance in the 28th minute with a courageous save, denying the Republic of Ireland’s Connor Cannon a scoring opportunity. Taylor’s bravery was further highlighted later in the half as he thwarted another Irish attack with a timely intervention.
As the first half drew to a close, England maintained their two-goal advantage, heading into halftime with confidence and momentum.
The Republic of Ireland emerged for the second half with renewed vigor, creating several early chances but failing to breach the resolute English defense. With the game finely poised, England almost extended their lead through Deacon Smalley’s freekick, narrowly missing the target.
In the 67th minute, England effectively sealed the victory as Jude Entwistle completed his hat-trick, capitalizing on a well-worked team move initiated by Ashton Houlahan’s cross.
Manager Luke Hampton made tactical substitutions, introducing fresh legs to maintain England’s dominance. Despite the Republic of Ireland’s efforts to salvage a consolation goal, England’s defense remained steadfast, ensuring a clean sheet. England then added a fourth goal in the 76th minute, courtesy of Oliver Spicer, effectively putting the game beyond reach for the Republic of Ireland.
As the match entered stoppage time, England continued to press forward, seeking to further extend their lead. Despite their best efforts, they were denied by the resilient Irish goalkeeper, maintaining the scoreline at 4-0.
With a commanding performance, England emerged victorious, claiming all three points in their quest to retain the SAFIB Centenary Shield.
