COVID 19 Update – New Government Regulations

An update regarding schools’ football and the new Government three-tier pandemic system

Following the government’s introduction of the three tier pandemic control system and the consequent assessment of risk by the ESFA’s emergency committee, there have been some changes to our arrangements for national ESFA activity. This is primarily a reflection of the travel restrictions advised in the standard tier 3 controls, and accords with the guidance given by public health officials in affected areas. This will also apply in the event that travel restrictions are applied in any new Covid 19 protocols.

2020/21 National Schools’ Cup Competitions

For the 20/21 national competitions, teams who are unable to fulfil their fixtures due to the travel restrictions which are currently part of the Tier 3 guidance, the fixture will be forfeited unless, in exceptional circumstances, a postponement can be agreed without undue disruption to the national competition. Where the fixture is forfeited, the entry fee paid by the team will be carried forward to next year’s competition

2019/20 National Schools’ Cup Finals

For the remaining 19/20 national finals, those affected by travel restrictions will not take place, and the trophy will be shared between the finalists

International Football & Trials

For the purpose of international trials, those residing in a Tier 3 area and thus advised not to travel out of their area, will not be permitted to attend trials and affected CSFAs should not nominate these players.

Thank you for your co-operation with these regulations.

DfE Guidance and Schools’ Football for 2020/21

An update to the return to Schools’ Football following new guidance shared by the DfE

The ESFA is pleased to report that the Department of Education has updated their guidance to remove the point around ‘avoiding contact sports’, giving the go-ahead for inter-school football to now resume.

The DfE’s guidance now aligns with that from The FA and DCMS, meaning that inter-school football can now go ahead as long as all risk assessments are completed as required and relevant guidance is followed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants.

You can read the DfE guidance here and ESFA / FA COVID-19 guidance and risk assessments can be found on our website here.

The ESFA will continue to keep all Schools’ Football participants updated with any changes to Government guidelines over the season. Affilitation for Associations and National Cup entries for secondary schools are now open and relevant information will be commuicated to staff listed on the ESFA website as and when required.
